The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has taken a significant step towards developing financial inclusion and innovation by launching the Bank of Tanzania Fintech Regulatory Sandbox.

This initiative is designed to create a safe and controlled environment for testing new financial products and services that haven’t yet been fully integrated into existing regulations.

What is the Fintech Regulatory Sandbox?

Imagine a safe testing ground for innovative financial solutions. That’s precisely what the BoT’s Fintech Regulatory Sandbox offers.

This platform allows fintech companies, banks, financial institutions, mobile money operators, and electronic money issuers to experiment with new ideas without the constraints of existing regulations.

How to Participate:

The sandbox operates on a quarterly basis, with the first application window opening from January 2nd to January 22nd, 2025. Interested companies can submit their applications through the dedicated Fintech Regulatory Sandbox Application Portal: https://frsp.bot.go.tz.

Applications will be evaluated based on their alignment with regulatory requirements and the clarity of responses provided. Evaluations are expected to be completed within 30 working days after the application window closes.

Promoting Financial Inclusion Through Innovation

The BoT recognises the potential of financial technology (FinTech) to transform the way financial services are delivered in Tanzania. This Sandbox program aims to provide a platform for FinTech companies and financial service providers to test their innovative solutions in a controlled environment.

By doing so, the BoT hopes to encourage the development of new products and services that can reach and empower previously unbanked or underserved populations.

A Learning Environment for All

The Fintech Regulatory Sandbox operates based on a “test and learn” approach. It allows participants to test their ideas in a real-world setting with a limited number of users. This approach provides valuable insights for both the FinTech companies and the BoT.

FinTech companies can gather crucial feedback on their products and services, while the BoT can learn about the potential benefits and risks associated with new financial technologies.

A Commitment to Progress

The launch of the Fintech Regulatory Sandbox underscores Tanzania’s commitment to promoting a dynamic and innovative financial landscape.

By providing a platform for experimentation and learning, the BoT is paving the way for the development of inclusive and accessible financial services that benefit all Tanzanians.
