KCB and Craft Silicon Drive Next Phase of Contactless Payments in Kenya

KCB Bank Kenya, in collaboration with Craft Silicon, has convened businesses and partners to explore innovations that make payment systems more seamless and efficient for everyday commercial transactions.

The initiative, announced in April 2026, highlights the growing importance of digital and contactless payment solutions in enhancing operational efficiency and customer experience across Kenya.

A key highlight of the collaboration is the Tourist App, which enables international visitors to make contactless payments using Visa or Mastercard directly through their mobile devices.

Merchants, in turn, can accept these payments conveniently on their own devices without requiring additional hardware.

Strategic Objectives of the Partnership

The partnership between KCB and Craft Silicon focuses on several core objectives:

  • Enhancing Payment Acceptance: Simplifying the process for merchants to accept digital payments, thereby improving turnaround time and reducing cash-handling risks.
  • Supporting Tourism and Cross-Border Transactions: The Tourist App addresses a specific pain point for international visitors by enabling frictionless, contactless payments, which is particularly valuable in Kenya’s growing tourism sector.
  • Advancing Digital Financial Inclusion: By equipping businesses with reliable, modern payment tools, the initiative helps integrate more enterprises into the formal economy and expands access to digital financial services.

When payment acceptance is simple and reliable, businesses are better placed to serve more customers, improve turnaround time, and participate more competitively in the formal economy

Relevance and Impact

This collaboration aligns with KCB’s broader strategy to strengthen digital financial inclusion and support the evolution of Kenya’s payments ecosystem. As digital payments continue to gain traction, solutions that reduce friction for both consumers and merchants become increasingly critical for economic growth.

The Tourist App, in particular, demonstrates how targeted technology can enhance the visitor experience while providing merchants with efficient tools to capture international spending. The partnership also contributes to the national objective of building a more inclusive and digitally enabled economy.
