Africa Finance Corporation Positions Nairobi Hub to Mobilise Capital for High-Impact Infrastructure Projects

Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) has signed a Host Country Agreement with the Government of Kenya, officially establishing its first regional office in Nairobi.

The agreement was signed during the Africa We Build Summit on 25 April 2026.

The signing was witnessed by H.E. President William Samoei Ruto, with H.E. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, signing on behalf of Kenya. AFC was represented by its President and CEO, Samaila Zubairu.

Strategic Role of the Nairobi Office

The AFC Nairobi Office will serve as a strategic base for transaction origination, capital mobilisation, and the execution of cross-border infrastructure projects across East Africa.

The AFC plans to deploy and mobilise over US$2 billion in investments in the region over the next three to five years, with a focus on high-impact sectors including:

  • Logistics and trade corridors
  • Power and transmission infrastructure
  • Special economic zones
  • Digital infrastructure
  • Climate-resilient assets

Kenya was selected due to its strategic location, robust digital and financial infrastructure, and established position as a regional hub for logistics, finance, and technology.

The office will also support the development of local currency financing solutions and enhance project bankability to attract greater institutional capital.

Existing AFC Footprint in Kenya

Since 2017, AFC has committed over US$1.3 billion to projects in Kenya. Notable investments include the Dongo Kundu Integrated Industrial Park, Naivasha Special Economic Zone II (in partnership with Arise Integrated Industrial Platforms), and the expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Leadership Statements

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi welcomed the establishment of the office, noting Kenya’s role as a continental hub for infrastructure and investment.

President William Ruto described the agreement as pivotal for the country’s development agenda under Vision 2030.
