AI Everything Kenya 2026: Why Digital Infrastructure Is the Foundation of Africa’s AI Economy

Before any algorithm runs, any model trains, or any fintech app processes a payment, someone has to build the physical and digital layers that make it possible.

In Africa, that work is happening right now, and it is moving faster than most people realise.

Digital infrastructure, including data centres, fibre networks, cloud platforms, and connectivity systems,is not a background story to Africa’s AI ambitions. It is the story. And at AI Everything Kenya 2026, it takes centre stage.

The Infrastructure Gap Is Closing

For years, Africa’s technology potential was discussed in the context of what was missing: reliable power, submarine cable landing points, hyperscale data centres, and last-mile connectivity. That framing is becoming outdated.

Hyperscale and carrier-neutral data centres are now operating across the continent.

Fibre infrastructure is expanding inland from coastal landing stations. Cloud adoption among African enterprises is accelerating.

And sovereign digital infrastructure, including government-owned or locally controlled, is emerging as a policy priority from Nairobi to Abuja to Kigali.

The gap has not closed entirely. But the trajectory has changed decisively.

Data Centres: Africa’s Compute Backbone

The AI economy runs on compute, and compute requires data centres. Two of Africa’s leading data centre operators are represented at AI Everything Kenya 2026: Adil El Youssefi of Africa Data Centers (Cassava Technologies) and Snehar Shah of IXAfrica Datacenters, both based in Kenya.

Their presence reflects a broader industry reality: East Africa is becoming a regional hub for carrier-neutral colocation infrastructure, attracting hyperscaler demand and enterprise workloads that previously required routing through Europe or the Middle East.

For African businesses, local data centre capacity means lower latency, better data sovereignty, and reduced foreign exchange exposure on cloud costs.

For AI specifically, it means the training and inference workloads that power African-built models can increasingly run on African soil.

Connectivity: The Last Mile Still Matters

Data centres mean little without the networks that connect them to users.

Africa’s connectivity landscape is improving as mobile broadband penetration is rising, submarine cable capacity has expanded significantly, and low-earth orbit satellite services are reaching previously unconnected communities.

But the last mile remains the hardest problem. Rural and peri-urban populations, often the primary beneficiaries of AI-powered agricultural, health, and financial services, are still the least connected.

Closing this gap is both a social imperative and a commercial opportunity.

Regulatory frameworks play a critical role here. Leaders like Prof. Lourinho Chemane (ICT Regulatory Authority, Mozambique) and Dr. Nkundwe Mwasaga (ICT Commission, Tanzania) represent the policy layer that determines how quickly connectivity infrastructure can be deployed, licensed, and monetised at a national scale.

Cloud and Enterprise Adoption

The shift from on-premise IT to cloud infrastructure is accelerating across African enterprises, and AI is the primary driver.

Organisations that previously had little reason to migrate workloads to the cloud are now doing so specifically to access AI services that require cloud-native architectures.

Infrastructure as a Sovereignty Question

Perhaps the most important shift in the African infrastructure conversation is this: digital infrastructure is increasingly understood as a matter of national and continental sovereignty.

Where data is stored, who controls compute capacity, and which companies own the physical layer of the internet are not just technical questions.

They are geopolitical ones. Africa’s leaders are beginning to answer them on their own terms.

That conversation is happening at AI Everything Kenya 2026.

The physical layer of Africa’s AI future is being built. The question is who builds it, who owns it, and who benefits.
