M-KOPA Reaches 10 Million Customers Milestone Across Africa

M-KOPA Reaches 10 Million Customers Milestone Across Africa

Pan-African fintech M-KOPA has reached 10 million customers. This M-KOPA 10 million customers Africa milestone spans five markets, including Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa.

The company announced the achievement on July 22, 2026, from its London headquarters.

The numbers behind this milestone tell a story of acceleration. M-KOPA sold its first solar unit back in 2012.

It then took eight years to reach its first million customers, largely through pay-as-you-go solar financing in Kenya and Uganda.

Everything changed after the company pivoted into smartphone financing in 2020.

The next nine million customers arrived in just six years. M-KOPA now onboards roughly 10,000 new customers every single day.

What Drives M-KOPA Financial Inclusion Fintech Growth

M-KOPA financial inclusion fintech strategy centers on a group the company calls Every Day Earners.

These are traders, artisans, boda boda riders, tailors, and small business owners who generate income daily but remain largely excluded from formal financial services.

Unlike conventional lenders, M-KOPA does not require payslips or extensive credit histories.

Instead, it builds products around how these customers actually earn and spend money.

M-KOPA co-founder and CEO Jesse Moore captured this philosophy directly.

He said informal has never meant unviable, and that ten million customers later, this is no longer just a belief. It is proven.

Chief Financial Officer Faraimose Kutadzaushe echoed that sentiment, describing the milestone as proof that a model built for Africa’s Every Day Earners does not just work, it scales and endures.

The Role of M-KOPA Smartphone Financing Africa Has Played

M-KOPA smartphone financing Africa services sit at the core of what the company calls its “More than a Phone” platform.

This combines device financing with embedded insurance, credit access, and device protection, all bundled at the point of purchase.

Customers pay for smartphones through manageable instalments rather than needing the full cost upfront.

Nigeria has emerged as a standout market within this expansion.

It became the fastest market in M-KOPA’s history to cross one million customers, highlighting just how quickly the model has gained traction in Africa’s largest economy.

Supporting this growth is what M-KOPA describes as Africa’s largest direct sales distribution network, made up of more than 40,000 agents spread across its five markets.

Manufacturing Muscle Behind the Numbers

M-KOPA’s growth is not limited to financing alone. In Kenya, the company opened the continent’s largest smartphone assembly factory back in 2023.

That facility employs more than 400 people, has achieved global ISO certification, and has produced more than 3.3 million devices to date.

This manufacturing capacity gives M-KOPA more control over its supply chain, an advantage that becomes increasingly valuable as customer numbers keep climbing.

The company’s revenue has grown at an average annual rate of 50 percent since 2020.

That growth trajectory helped M-KOPA report its first-ever annual profit in October 2025, alongside a 66 percent jump in revenue.

A month later, its Kenyan subsidiary crossed $1.6 billion in total credit extended to customers, underscoring the scale of demand for its lending products.

This Africa Fintech Milestone 2026 in Context

This Africa fintech milestone 2026 achievement arrives at a moment when the smartphone financing sector has become genuinely crowded.

Competitors including Watu Credit and various mobile network operators now offer their own device financing schemes across the continent.

M-KOPA’s scale, spanning ten million customers, five markets, and tens of thousands of agents, represents a real differentiator if the figures hold up to scrutiny.

Some coverage of this announcement has noted that key financial details remain undisclosed alongside the customer milestone.

Whether this scale translates into a durable, sustainably profitable lending business over the long term remains a question the company’s own statement does not fully answer.

That said, the underlying trend is difficult to dispute. Smartphones are increasingly functioning as financial infrastructure across Africa, not just communication devices.

What Comes Next

Nearly nine in ten workers across sub-Saharan Africa earn their living in the informal economy.

By 2040, Africa is projected to have among the largest populations of non-salaried, economically active adults anywhere in the world.

That demographic reality is precisely the market M-KOPA has built itself around.

For millions of users, owning a smartphone through M-KOPA’s financing model has become a first step toward broader digital participation, including access to payments, online commerce, digital banking, and remote work opportunities.

As the company looks toward its next ten million customers, its ability to sustain this pace while building a genuinely profitable business will determine whether this milestone marks the middle of a much longer growth story, or the peak of an unusually fast six-year run.
