5.6 Million Smallholder Farmers in Kenya to Receive Real-Time Agricultural Guidance with Safaricom’s AI Chatbot Launch

Smallholder farmers in underserved communities are gaining access to vital agricultural advice through a groundbreaking partnership between Safaricom and Opportunity International. They have launched FarmerAI, an AI chatbot designed to change farming practices in Kenya.

Bridging the Agricultural Information Gap

For millions of smallholder farmers in Kenya, making informed decisions about planting, weather patterns, and market prices has always been a challenge.

Traditionally, these decisions relied on generational knowledge or occasional visits from agricultural agents. FarmerAI addresses this by delivering timely and accurate information directly to farmers.

The chatbot combines generative AI with localised agricultural insights, offering essential data on key farming topics.

From understanding complex weather patterns and optimising fertiliser use to managing pests and accessing real-time market prices, FarmerAI empowers farmers to make better decisions and improve their yields.

Seamless and Accessible Support

FarmerAI stands out for its accessibility. Farmers can interact with the chatbot through familiar platforms such as SMS and WhatsApp, ensuring even those in remote areas can benefit from the service without requiring advanced technology.

The chatbot builds on the foundation of Safaricom’s existing DigiFarm service, which digitally connects thousands of farmers. By integrating with DigiFarm, FarmerAI provides a smooth, user-friendly experience for accessing agricultural information.

A Collaborative Vision for the Future

Greg Nelson, Chief Technology Officer at Opportunity International, noted, “AI is already transforming the world around us, but the impact this technology can have on underserved communities is truly impactful. Our partnership will make agricultural information more accessible, actionable, and equitable for everyone.”

Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa added, “AI is a critical part of the present and the future.” This initiative underscores Safaricom’s mission to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030, with FarmerAI serving as a tangible example of its commitment to empowering people through technological solutions.
