The European Investment Bank (EIB) Global has committed €40 million to Speedinvest’s inaugural Africa-focused investment vehicle, announced on 16 March 2026.
This commitment marks a significant institutional endorsement of high-growth technology startups on the continent and reinforces the strategic alignment between European capital and African innovation ecosystems.
The venture targets tech-enabled and mobile-based companies in payments, healthcare, mobility, education, and related sectors.
Investments will prioritise established innovation hubs, including Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, while extending coverage to high-potential markets, including Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda.
The initiative aligns with the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy for Africa and supports the broader objective of fostering digital and financial inclusion, cross-border scaling, and sustainable economic linkages between the two continents.

Strategic Objectives and Investment Focus
The EIB’s participation aims to achieve several interconnected goals:
- Enable African startups to scale regionally and internationally by providing growth-stage capital and access to European networks.
- Accelerate digital and financial inclusion through investments in mobile-first solutions that serve underserved populations.
- Drive job creation, particularly for youth, and expand access to essential digital services in high-growth sectors.
- Strengthen commercial and capital market connections between African and European ecosystems.
A minimum of 30% of the fund’s capital is allocated to companies that promote gender equality, supporting women as founders, employees, or consumers. The operation qualifies under the 2X Challenge, the global standard for gender-smart investing.
This structured allocation reflects a deliberate emphasis on inclusive growth, ensuring that technological advancement benefits diverse segments of African societies.
Institutional and Ecosystem Context
Speedinvest brings a proven track record in African growth-stage investing, with prior commitments to companies such as Moove (Nigeria), FairMoney (Nigeria), Khazna (Egypt), Mophones (Kenya), Anda (Angola), Julaya (Côte d’Ivoire), Oze (Ghana), Precium (South Africa), and Leta (Kenya).
The new fund deepens this engagement and leverages Speedinvest’s European network for follow-on capital, sector expertise, and strategic introductions.
The fund is managed by Speedinvest Partners Deepali Nangia and Rana Abdel Latif, with plans to establish an African office to strengthen on-the-ground support and local ecosystem integration.
Technology has the power to turn good ideas into real impact. By backing this vehicle, we are enabling African innovators to scale, access new markets, and build sustainable businesses, creating shared opportunities for both Africa and Europe. In a world of fragmentation, we are building bridges

Complementary Development: EU–Kenya Digital Dialogue
The investment announcement coincides with the formal launch of the EU–Kenya Digital Dialogue on 16 March 2026.
Kenya becomes the first African country to establish this structured bilateral framework with the European Union.

The dialogue covers digital infrastructure, data governance, cybersecurity, digital skills, and regulatory alignment, creating a platform for deeper cooperation on technology policy and investment.
This initiative complements the EIB–Speedinvest commitment by creating an enabling environment for cross-continental digital innovation and capital flows.
Future Outlook
Europe’s deepening investment links with African startups, exemplified by EIB Global’s €40 million commitment to Speedinvest’s Africa-focused vehicle, reflect a strategic recognition of the continent’s innovation potential and its role in global digital and economic transformation.
By targeting high-growth technology sectors, prioritising gender inclusion, and supporting cross-border scaling, the fund advances both commercial objectives and development priorities.
The simultaneous launch of the EU–Kenya Digital Dialogue further strengthens policy and ecosystem alignment. These developments signal a maturing partnership between European institutional capital and African entrepreneurship.
