The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has announced a proposed investment of up to US$20 million in Lightrock Africa Fund II (LRAF II), alongside an additional US$5 million co-investment envelope.
This commitment, disclosed on March 18, 2026, demonstrates strong institutional confidence in Lightrock’s strategy to provide growth-stage capital to high-potential companies across Africa.
LRAF II targets a final fund size of US$150 million to US$200 million and adopts a broad, generalist approach.
The fund will concentrate primarily on the continent’s three largest startup and private capital markets, comprising Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria, while retaining flexibility for opportunistic investments in other African jurisdictions where Lightrock identifies compelling growth prospects and impactful business models.

Investment Strategy and Portfolio Approach
LRAF II will maintain a concentrated portfolio of eight to twelve companies, reflecting a deliberate focus on quality over quantity.
The fund plans to deploy between US$10 million and US$20 million per transaction, typically acquiring significant minority equity stakes.
Lightrock intends to secure board representation in portfolio companies to contribute actively to strategic direction, governance, and value creation.
The strategy emphasises:
- Scalable, high-growth businesses with proven traction and defensible market positions.
- Sectors with strong structural tailwinds, including fintech, digital infrastructure, healthcare, education, mobility, and consumer technology.
- Companies capable of regional or pan-African expansion, leveraging technology to address large, underserved markets.
IFC’s US$5 million co-investment envelope allows the institution to participate directly in select portfolio company deals alongside the fund, further aligning interests and providing additional capital for follow-on rounds.
Role of Lightrock Kenya and the Global Platform
LRAF II benefits from advisory and operational support provided by Lightrock Kenya, the African arm of the global Lightrock Group.
Lightrock Kenya manages on-the-ground sourcing, due diligence, portfolio management, and value-add activities, drawing on deep regional expertise.
The broader Lightrock Group, launched in 2021 as an independent, impact-focused investment platform headquartered in London, contributes global experience, sector knowledge, and access to international networks.
This combination of local presence and global resources positions the fund to identify opportunities, support execution, and facilitate cross-border scaling for portfolio companies.

Strategic Significance of IFC’s Commitment
IFC’s participation as a cornerstone investor validates Lightrock’s Africa strategy and enhances the fund’s credibility among co-investors and limited partners.
The commitment aligns with IFC’s broader mandate to mobilise private capital for sustainable development in emerging markets, particularly in sectors that drive job creation, digital inclusion, and economic resilience.
By backing LRAF II, IFC supports:
- Growth-stage financing for companies that have surpassed the venture stage but require significant capital to scale.
- Regional ecosystem development through concentrated investment in Africa’s leading innovation markets.
- Impact-oriented outcomes, including gender inclusion, climate resilience, and access to essential services.
The investment also reflects IFC’s continued focus on private-sector-led solutions to Africa’s development challenges, complementing its existing portfolio of fintech, digital infrastructure, and climate-related commitments.
Future Outlook
The International Finance Corporation’s proposed US$20 million investment, together with a US$5 million co-investment envelope, provides significant institutional backing for Lightrock Africa Fund II.
This support strengthens the fund’s capacity to deploy meaningful growth-stage capital in Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and select other markets, while reinforcing Lightrock’s position as a leading impact-focused growth investor on the continent.
The commitment confirms the growing alignment between global development finance and Africa’s high-growth technology ecosystem.
