Why KCB’s Pesalink Fee Reduction Matters for MSMEs and Consumers

KCB Bank Kenya has significantly reduced its Pesalink transaction fees as part of the industry-wide “Tuma Direct na 20/-” campaign.

Effective immediately, customers using KCB’s mobile and internet banking channels will pay a flat fee of KSh20 for Pesalink transfers between KSh1,000 and KSh999,999. Transactions below KSh1,000 are now free.

This move standardises and lowers the cost of real-time interbank transfers, making digital payments more affordable, predictable, and accessible for both individual consumers and businesses.

Key Changes in Pesalink Fees

  • Flat Fee Structure: KSh20 for transfers ranging from KSh1,000 to KSh999,999.
  • Free Transactions: All Pesalink transfers below KSh1,000 are now free of charge.
  • Channel Availability: The new pricing applies to transactions initiated via KCB’s mobile app and internet banking platforms.

The reduction brings KCB in line with other major Kenyan banks participating in the campaign, creating greater consistency across the Pesalink network.

Why This Matters for MSMEs and Consumers

The fee adjustment has particular significance for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of Kenya’s economy. Lower and more predictable transaction costs help MSMEs:

  • Improve cash flow management through faster and cheaper interbank transfers.
  • Reduce overall operational expenses associated with payments and collections.
  • Enhance competitiveness by enabling more efficient supplier and customer transactions.
  • Encourage greater adoption of digital payments over cash, improving transparency and record-keeping.

For individual consumers, the changes make everyday digital transfers more affordable and convenient, supporting broader financial inclusion goals.

By standardising Pesalink transaction fees at KSh20, we are eliminating price ambiguity and offering a clear, predictable cost for bank-to-bank transfers. This is particularly beneficial for MSMEs that require efficient and low-cost payment infrastructure to better manage their cash flow

Strategic Context

This initiative forms part of KCB’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at enhancing customer experience, promoting financial inclusion, and accelerating the shift toward a more digital and cash-light economy in Kenya.

By reducing barriers to digital payments, KCB is reinforcing its commitment to supporting economic activity and making formal financial services more accessible to all segments of society.

Looking Ahead

KCB Bank Kenya’s reduction of Pesalink fees to a flat KSh20 (and free for amounts below KSh1,000) represents a customer-friendly and business-enabling move that lowers costs and increases predictability for MSMEs and individual users.

As part of the industry-wide campaign, it strengthens the overall digital payments ecosystem in Kenya.
