Airtel Nigeria Joins Other Telcos in Latest Move to Raise Voice and Internet Plans by 50%

Airtel Nigeria, the country’s second-largest telecom provider, has announced a significant 50% increase in the prices of its internet and voice plans.

This move follows a similar hike by MTN Nigeria just a week earlier, signaling a broader trend in the telecom industry. The adjustment comes after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a tariff increase on January 20, 2025.

New Data and Call Tariffs

Under the revised pricing, Airtel Nigeria’s most affordable monthly data plan now offers 2GB for ₦1,500, replacing the previous 1.2GB plan that cost ₦1,000. Other key changes include:

  • 3GB for ₦2,000 (previously 1.5GB at ₦1,200)
  • 4GB for ₦2,500 (previously 3GB at ₦1,500)
  • 8GB for ₦3,000 (previously 4.5GB at ₦2,000)
  • 10GB for ₦4,000 (previously 6GB at ₦2,500)
  • 13GB for ₦5,000 (previously 10GB at ₦3,000)
  • 18GB for ₦6,000 (previously 15GB at ₦4,000)
  • 25GB for ₦8,000 (previously 18GB at ₦5,000)

While Airtel has increased data prices, some of its unlimited data packages remain unchanged. Plans such as ₦20,000 for 200GB (with 10GB daily after exhausting the main data) and ₦30,000 for 300GB within 30 days are still available.

Impact on Voice Call Rates

Alongside the data tariff changes, Airtel Nigeria has implemented a new 25 kobo flat rate per second for calls. This adjustment has increased the cost of a one-minute call to ₦15, up from ₦11. However, the increase does not affect many daily and weekly plans, such as the one-week 5GB plan for ₦1,500.

Public Reaction and Market Implications

Airtel’s price increase follows the backlash faced by MTN Nigeria after its own tariff hike exceeded the NCC-approved target on some data plans.

While MTN later issued an apology to subscribers, the rising costs of telecom services in Nigeria have sparked concerns among consumers and businesses alike.

Many fear that continued price hikes could make internet access less affordable, impacting digital inclusion and economic activities reliant on connectivity.

What’s Driving the Price Hike?

Several factors contribute to the rising costs of telecom services in Nigeria:

  1. Regulatory Adjustments – The NCC’s approval of a 50% tariff increase has given telecom operators the green light to review their pricing structures.
  2. Inflation and Economic Pressures – Rising operational costs, including energy and infrastructure maintenance, have forced telcos to adjust their pricing models.
  3. Removal of Subsidies – Airtel, like MTN, is removing subsidies from special plans to ensure a more sustainable pricing framework.
