The world of artificial intelligence (AI) is witnessing a surge in generative AI, a powerful technology with the potential to change various industries.
Recognising this potential, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has made a significant commitment of $230 million to propel the development and commercialization of generative AI applications. This investment is a clear signal of AWS’s intent to be a leader in the generative AI space.
Fueling Innovation: The Two Pillars of the Initiative
The $230 million commitment is divided into two key pillars designed to empower early-stage startups working on generative AI solutions:
AWS Credits
Startups will receive access to a substantial pool of AWS credits. These credits act as a fuel source, allowing them to leverage the immense power of AWS’s cloud computing infrastructure.
This includes access to storage, databases, and specialised AI chips like AWS Trainium and Inferentia2. Additionally, startups can utilise these credits on Amazon SageMaker, a service designed to streamline the building and training of machine learning models.
Furthermore, access to Amazon Bedrock, a platform facilitating the development and deployment of secure generative AI applications, adds another layer of support.

AWS Generative AI Accelerator
A core component of the initiative is the second cohort of the AWS Generative AI Accelerator programme. This intensive 10-week programme will select 80 promising early-stage startups tackling real-world challenges with generative AI.
These chosen startups will benefit from a comprehensive support system:
- Mentorship: The programme will pair startups with business and technical mentors who are experts in the specific industry the startup operates in. This tailored guidance will be invaluable for navigating the complexities of both business and technology.
- Financial Support: Each selected startup can receive up to $1 million in AWS credits. This financial backing provides crucial resources to support the development, training, testing, and launch of their generative AI solutions.
- Industry Expertise: Startups will gain access to industry experts, technology resources, and technical sessions from programme partner NVIDIA. This collaboration extends to an invitation to join the NVIDIA Inception programme, promoting growth for innovative startups.
- Networking and Showcase: The programme terminates in a grand showcase at the re:Invent 2024 conference in Las Vegas. All 80 participating startups will have the opportunity to present their solutions to potential investors, customers, partners, and AWS leaders at this prestigious event.
Building on a Strong Foundation
The first cohort of the AWS Generative AI Accelerator programme has already demonstrated its success. Participating startups, like Leonardo.AI (generative AI tools for creators) and Vevo Therapeutics (AI models for drug discovery), have highlighted significant benefits.
These include cost reductions in AI inference, accelerated model performance, and valuable connections within the AWS ecosystem.
