Bolt has teamed up with M-KOPA and Ampersand Energy to introduce an electric bike fleet in Kenya, aiming to provide more affordable options for drivers looking to own electric motorbikes.
The initial phase will see 5,000 electric bikes deployed in Nairobi over the next three years, with plans to expand to other major cities in Kenya.
Bolt believes that this introduction is in line with Kenya’s National E-mobility Policy, which promotes the local manufacturing and assembly of electric vehicles.
These electric bikes produce no emissions and require less maintenance than traditional vehicles, making them a financially advantageous choice for drivers.
Drivers can lease Roam and Ampersand electric motorbikes at discounted rates through M-KOPA’s vehicle financing services, with prices starting from Ksh. 9,962 to Ksh. 14,943.
“We are excited to introduce our electric bike fleet, in partnership with M-KOPA, as part of our ongoing efforts to support and empower our drivers,” said Caroline Weichai, Regional Director of RideHailing Operations.
M-KOPA offers a solution that uses digital micropayments and IoT technology to allow customers to use electric motorcycles without requiring collateral or a guarantor.
To participate, drivers must be part of the M-KOPA fleet and only use the Bolt platform, with the option to eventually own the motorcycles once the lease term is over.
By offering subsidies on electric motorbikes, Bolt allows drivers to purchase these vehicles at a cost that is the same as or lower than traditional petrol motorbikes.
This strategy is projected to result in around 40% savings in overall ownership expenses when compared to petrol bikes.
Electric motorbikes have been gaining popularity in Nairobi due to their potential to reduce emissions and create a cleaner environment.
The shift towards electric mobility aligns with Kenya’s sustainability goals and aims to decrease the country’s carbon footprint.
Financial Inclusion in Kenya is a key focus of M-KOPA’s efforts to empower drivers through ownership of electric motorbikes.
M-KOPA offers flexible financing and payment plans for underbanked individuals to bridge the gap between traditional banking services and those with limited access.
“As the leading financier of electric motorbikes in Kenya, we’re committed to redefining mobility in Kenya through affordable financing solutions for electric motorbikes, particularly for the underbanked,” said David Damberger, Managing Director of M-KOPA Mobility.
This increased access to financing allows drivers to invest in more efficient electric motorbikes, ultimately lowering their operating costs and increasing their profits.
As a result, drivers can improve their economic standing and contribute to the overall growth of the economy.
