Visualise a world where healthcare is not just a privilege for the few but a fundamental right for all. In 2015, inspired by the potential of mobile technology, a group of innovators embarked on a mission to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for Kenyans.
Recognising the challenges faced by millions of people in the country who fell into poverty due to unexpected healthcare expenses, especially with only 2% of the population having insurance, they set out to bridge the gap between healthcare providers, insurers, and members using digital solutions.
This vision led to the creation of M-TIBA, an innovative platform that digitally connects members, healthcare providers, and payers. Its primary goal was to provide 24/7 easy access to insurance benefits, insights, and limits through mobile phones, while also ensuring faster payments for healthcare providers.
Within a short period, the platform impacted 4.8 million lives and connected 5,000 healthcare providers with 20 payers using the platform. M-TIBA quickly gained momentum, with over 4 million people signing up for the mobile health wallet, demonstrating the urgent need for such a solution in the market.

The overwhelming response served as a stepping stone to attracting major industry players, transforming CarePay into the digital connector between healthcare payers, providers, and members. This allowed M-TIBA to cover the end-to-end healthcare journey and address various challenges within the healthcare ecosystem.
By improving the way money flows through the healthcare system and streamlining transactions and information flows in real-time, M-TIBA significantly lowered administration costs associated with manual processing.
It enabled faster payments to hospitals, unlocked better rates, and enhanced transparency, ultimately reducing unaccounted costs often caused by fraud.
M-TIBA’s innovative approach did not go unnoticed, as it was recognised internationally, ranking number 7 on Fortune’s Change the World list alongside industry giants like Alibaba, PayPal, and Zoom.
Additionally, it was acknowledged as one of the Top 25 companies creating new ways to access and finance healthcare through mobile phones by the Knowledge House in Kenya in 2021.
