Bio-Logical, a Kenyan climate tech startup leading the charge in carbon capture, has recently secured $1.3 million in funding to drive its mission forward.
This investment, spearheaded by CrossBoundary and Redshaw Advisors, will significantly boost Bio-Logical’s capacity to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and empower smallholder farmers across Kenya.
Scaling Up for Impact
The funding fuels Bio-Logical’s ambitious plans to increase its annual carbon removal capacity to a massive 100,000 metric tonnes of CO2 within the next 18 months.
This translates to a fivefold increase in their current impact. Furthermore, the investment will pave the way for establishing three additional biochar production facilities across Kenya, expanding their reach and impact.

Biochar: A Win-Win Solution
Bio-Logical’s innovative approach tackles climate change head-on through a unique process. They transform agricultural waste, a burden for many farmers, into a powerful weapon: biochar.
This biochar fertiliser not only retains carbon but also enhances soil quality, leading to increased yields and improved food security for smallholder farmers.
This latest funding round builds upon Bio-Logical’s impressive trajectory. Following a $1 million seed investment in November 2023, the company remains steadfast in its commitment to achieving its ambitious goals: empowering 1 million smallholder farmers and capturing a remarkable 1 million metric tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030.
Bio-Logical: A Symbol of Hope for Africa
Bio-Logical’s success story is not just about a company; it’s about a continent rising to the challenge of climate change. This investment reflects a growing trend: Africa is witnessing a surge in climate tech funding, with Kenya at the forefront of this movement. Bio-Logical serves as a shining example of African innovation tackling global issues.
Bio-Logical’s Vision
Their pioneering Mt. Kenya facility, soon to be Africa’s largest biochar hub, demonstrates their commitment. Here, they plan to collaborate with over 100,000 smallholder farmers through partnerships with ten major agribusinesses.
The core aspects of their work are:
- Carbon Removal: Bio-Logical champions nature-based solutions that not only remove carbon but also combat the devastating effects of climate change already impacting Africa.
- Land Regeneration: They go beyond simple carbon capture. Bio-Logical develops long-term projects focused on regenerating land and forests, tackling critical challenges faced by African farmers like degraded soil, unpredictable droughts, and limited access to affordable fertiliser.
- Supporting Smallholders: Recognising the disproportionate burden placed on those who least contributed to climate change, Bio-Logical ensures their solutions empower smallholder farmers. They believe that building climate-resilient communities is fundamental to achieving a sustainable future.

The Urgency of Carbon Removal
The need for action is undeniable. Over the past five years, Africa has borne the brunt of climate change’s wrath, experiencing a 1.5 times faster rise in temperature than the global average.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)) underscores the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the need to scale up carbon removal by a staggering 5000 times by 2050.
Bio-Logical’s innovative approach and unwavering commitment offer a point of hope in the fight against climate change. By empowering communities, harnessing the power of nature, and promoting innovation, Bio-Logical is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable future for Kenya, Africa, and the planet as a whole.
