MTN Invests $1.2 Million in Empowering Ugandan Youth for a Digital Future

MTN Uganda’s flagship initiative, the MTN ACE programme, is entering its second phase with a substantial investment of UGX 4.5 billion (approximately $1.2 million).

This three-year programme aims to empower a remarkable 8,000 young Ugandans and nurture the creation of 150 startups, promoting a digitally-savvy workforce prepared for the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Building a Skilled Workforce Through Strategic Partnerships

The enhanced MTN ACE programme leverages strategic partnerships with key stakeholders to maximise its impact. Collaborations with government bodies like the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, universities, and innovation hubs will be instrumental in establishing four regional ICT centres across the country.

These centres will provide comprehensive training programmes encompassing vital areas like tech upskilling, career readiness, and entrepreneurship.

Mulinge Sylvia M.B.S., CEO at MTN Uganda, reiterated the company’s unwavering commitment to empowering Ugandan youth. “We remain committed to empowering the country’s youth to become innovators, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders,” she stated.

Addressing Youth Unemployment: A Public-Private Partnership Approach

With youth unemployment posing a significant challenge in Uganda, public-private partnerships like MTN ACE are crucial for unlocking the nation’s vast potential.

By equipping young Ugandans with the necessary digital skills and fostering an environment conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship, this programme has the potential to create a more robust and competitive Ugandan workforce.

MTN ACE: A Multi-Pronged Approach to Youth Development

MTN ACE is a comprehensive programme designed to address the diverse needs of young Ugandans. It offers three distinct tracks:

  • Ace Skilling: Tailored for youths in or out of school, this programme equips them with entrepreneurial skills, empowering them to become future business leaders.

Ace Career: Equipping Graduates for the Workplace

The Ace Career programme is a three-month intensive programme designed to equip fresh graduates with the essential skills and experience needed to thrive in today’s competitive job market.

The programme focuses on developing critical soft skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership. Additionally, participants receive practical training in areas relevant to their chosen career paths, such as business writing, presentations, and project management.

Eligibility Criteria for Ace Career:

  • Ugandan citizen and resident
  • Degree/diploma holder from a recognised Ugandan university within the last three academic years (2019/2020, 2020/2021, 2022/2023)
  • Aged between 18 and 29 years at the time of application
  • Proficient in English
  • Not currently employed
  • Available to participate in a three-month internship placement at MTN Uganda or a partner organisation
  • Able to attend three-day, in-person soft skills training sessions for three months

Priority is given to applicants in the following categories:

  • First Class and Upper Second Class Honours graduates
  • Graduates with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degrees
  • Female graduates
  • Persons with disabilities (PWDs)
  • Graduates from disadvantaged backgrounds or residing in remote areas with limited employment opportunities

Application Process for Ace Career:

Applications for the Ace Career programme can be submitted online through the official MTN ACE Skills Programme webpage . The application process typically involves submitting a resume, cover letter, and academic transcripts. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.

Ace Tech: Upskilling for the Digital Economy

The Ace Tech programme caters to young Ugandans with a passion for technology and innovation. This programme provides participants with the technical skills and knowledge needed to develop and launch their own digital products or services. The curriculum covers areas like coding, software development, app development, and digital marketing.

Who can apply?

  • Digital enthusiasts: Are you passionate about tech and want to level up your programming and entrepreneurial skills? This programme is for you!
  • Tech builders: Have you ever tried building a digital product, either solo or as part of a team? If you’re looking to refine your skills, apply now!
  • Committed learners: We’re looking for individuals who can dedicate at least 80% of their time to the programme.
  • Age requirement: You must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
  • Tech access: To fully participate, you’ll need access to a laptop and an internet connection.
