The African Development Bank Provides Funding for Circular Economy SMEs in Africa

The African Development Bank-supported AfriCircular Innovators Programme has carefully selected 30 small and medium-sized enterprises to receive financing and technical assistance for the expansion of their circular economy initiatives.

This inaugural cohort, hailing from Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Rwanda, participated in an online onboarding event on August 9, 2024. This effort is a key component of the bank’s overall strategy to advance sustainable development and resource efficiency on the continent.

Supported by the African Development Bank’s Africa Circular Economy Facility (ACEF) and carried out in partnership with the African Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA), the AfriCircular Innovators Programme is designed to back inventive circular economy solutions that advance sustainable and inclusive development.

It’s worth noting that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) make up 80 percent of Africa’s businesses, emphasising their crucial role in the continent’s economic framework. Additionally, the circular economy in Africa holds the potential to create an estimated 11 million job openings.

To promote the expansion of their circular economy projects, these chosen SMEs will receive full support, including technical assistance, capacity building, and funding access within the five key areas recognised by ACEA for their significant potential in generating employment and economic advancement.

Included in the recipients are businesses actively engaged in creating pioneering solutions, such as intelligent energy metering, the use of coconut husks in construction, transforming plastic waste into robust construction blocks, and digitising the collection and processing of electronic waste.

Ndintambwe Feeds Limited, a Rwandan company that manufactures eco-friendly animal feeds using insects and maggots as a substitute for soybean and fishmeal, expressed their appreciation for the chance.

The founder, Jean Bosco Nshutiyimana, underscored the obstacles encountered by SMEs and emphasised the critical requirement for financial support and skills development to efficiently execute sustainable projects.

Koumbem Fatou Emilienne, speaking on behalf of Siboré Luxury Hair, another recipient, emphasised the valuable opportunity offered by the AfriCircular’s Innovators Program to support their dedication to sustainability.

They detailed how the program will empower them to improve production processes, minimise waste, enhance energy efficiency, and strengthen their environmental impact through financial assistance and access to advanced technologies.

The AfriCircular Innovators Programme is in close alignment with the African Development Bank’s Jobs for Youth in Africa (JfYA) Strategy.

With Africa’s youth population projected to double to over 830 million by 2050, it’s essential to capitalise on this demographic advantage for economic expansion, especially in light of the enduring high rates of unemployment and underemployment.

The Africa Circular Economy Facility (ACEF) serves as the only Multi-Donor Trust Fund specifically committed to integrating the circular economy into Africa.

It strategically funds initiatives that promote inclusive and environmentally friendly growth, maximise resource efficiency, encourage innovation, and generate sustainable employment opportunities. This strategic approach is crucial for advancing Africa’s sustainable economic progression in the years ahead.

Through supporting these SMEs, the bank aims to demonstrate the practicality and advantages of circular economy practices, thus encouraging wider implementation throughout Africa.
