What FUNGUO’s $2.65M Fund Means for Tanzania’s Innovation Future

Tanzania is steadily transforming into a hub of homegrown innovation, with the latest milestone coming from the FUNGUO Innovation Programme, implemented by UNDP Tanzania with support from the EU, UK FCDO, and Finland.

With catalytic funding now at TZS 6.5 billion (USD 2.65 million) and 74 startups under its wing, FUNGUO is deepening its mission: empowering women- and youth-led ventures to create scalable, market-ready solutions that respond to real Tanzanian challenges from agriculture to climate and financial inclusion.

Bridging the Funding Gap: The Latest Cohort’s Game-Changing Boost

In its fourth funding round, FUNGUO has selected 13 early-stage innovators to receive equity-free grants, tailored business support, and mentorship designed to bridge the severe early-stage funding gap in East Africa.

These ventures cover sectors from agritech to ecosystem enablers, with 40% of the funding reserved for women-led or women-founded businesses a deliberate push toward gender equity in Tanzania’s startup scene.

Take MazaoHub, an agritech standout from FUNGUO’s pilot seed round. Co-founded by Geophrey Tenganamba, the platform connects smallholder farmers to climate-smart agronomy tools and markets.

Post-FUNGUO support, MazaoHub secured a transformative $2M pre-seed round in September 2025, partnering with CRDB Bank Foundation to reach farmers across 15 regions.

Mapping the Path Forward: Insights from the UNDP-Deloitte Study

Complementing the funding surge, a fresh UNDP-Deloitte study titled “Study of Entrepreneur Support Organisations in Tanzania” lays bare the ecosystem’s strengths and gaps, from fragmented mentorship networks to limited access to impact investors.

Launched alongside the fourth cohort unveiling, this collaborative report highlights how programmes like FUNGUO can fill gaps in business development services, urging more coordinated efforts to scale support for high-potential startups.

The study underscores a key truth: Tanzania’s entrepreneurs aren’t short on ideas but on enablers. By mapping over 50 support organisations, it provides a blueprint for donors, governments, and private players to align resources, promote a more inclusive and efficient innovation landscape.

Nurturing the Next Wave: YouthIgnite, GreenCatalyst, and Policy Momentum

FUNGUO’s impact ripples beyond direct funding. Initiatives like the #YouthIgnite Student Founders Fellowship equip university students with pitching skills, business training, and seed grants to launch ventures right from campus.

Meanwhile, #GreenCatalyst targets sustainable MSMEs in the forestry value chain, with its latest call closing August 15, 2025, to drive eco-friendly innovations amid Tanzania’s push for green growth.

Dr Blandina Kilama, Deputy Executive Secretary for Trade and Innovation at Tanzania’s National Planning Commission, highlighted how new crowdfunding guidelines are accelerating business formation and democratising access to capital.

“FUNGUO’s role in fostering national development goals is commendable,” she noted during the recent launch event, emphasising its alignment with Vision 2025 for a knowledge-based economy.

This is an ecosystem in motion converting grassroots innovation into investable opportunity. With international partners on board and local startups rising fast, FUNGUO is anchoring Tanzania’s evolution from aid-driven initiatives to market-driven innovation.
