What Innocent Ike’s Leadership Means for the Future of Access Holdings

Access Holdings Plc, the parent company of Nigeria’s largest bank by assets, has announced the appointment of Mr Innocent Ike as its substantive Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (GMD/CEO), effective August 29, 2025, following regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

This leadership transition marks the end of Ms Bolaji Agbede’s 18-month tenure as Acting Group CEO, during which she successfully navigated the company through a challenging period.

Agbede will now return to her substantive role as Executive Director, Business Support.

A Strategic Leadership Transition

The appointment of Innocent Ike comes at a pivotal moment for Access Holdings, following the tragic death of former Group CEO Herbert Wigwe in a helicopter crash in February 2024.

Ms Bolaji Agbede stepped into the acting role during this period of uncertainty, delivering stability and achieving significant milestones.

Her leadership ensured workforce stability, the successful execution of a ₦351 billion ($229 million) rights issue, and the seamless hosting of two Annual General Meetings (AGMs).

However, CBN regulations stipulating minimum years of experience for a financial holding company’s CEO necessitated the transition to a new substantive leader.

Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Chairman of Access Holdings, praised Agbede’s contributions, stating, “Her outstanding contributions over the past 18 months have been invaluable, and we appreciate her dedication in navigating the company through challenges and opportunities. While regulatory requirements necessitate this change, we are grateful for the strong foundation that has been laid.”

Agbede’s return to her role as Executive Director, Business Support, ensures continuity in the company’s strategic operations, leveraging her extensive experience within the Access ecosystem.

Innocent Ike: A Seasoned Leader for a New Era

Innocent Ike brings over 30 years of banking and financial services experience to his new role as Group CEO.

A graduate of the University of Lagos, where he was the Best Graduating Student in Accounting in 1988, Ike is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

He is also a certified International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) expert.

Ike’s career includes a decade at Access Bank, where he rose to the position of General Manager, overseeing portfolios in the corporate, commercial, and public sectors.

Notably, he served as Managing Director/CEO of Polaris Bank from 2020 to 2022, where he launched VULTe, an award-winning digital banking platform recognised by BusinessDay BAFI and the Nigerian Fintech Awards in 2021 and 2022.

He is also the founder of Blue Marina Asset Management, a Nigerian fund and portfolio management company licensed since February 2025.

In his first statement as Group CEO, Ike expressed his commitment to building on the legacy of his predecessors: “I am honoured to take on the role of Group Managing Director/CEO and excited to work alongside the talented team at Access Holdings. I look forward to building on the strong legacy established by Herbert Wigwe and Bolaji Agbede and driving our vision forward, ensuring we continue to deliver exceptional value to our shareholders and stakeholders.”

A New Chapter for Access Holdings

The leadership transition coincides with another significant development: the resignation of Roosevelt Ogbonna, Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank Plc, from his non-executive director role at Access Holdings, in compliance with new CBN corporate governance rules.

This move, announced hours before Ike’s appointment, highlights Access Holdings’ commitment to regulatory compliance and governance standards.

Access Holdings, with operations in over a dozen African countries and a presence in Europe and Asia, is a leading financial services group with ambitions to become the “world’s most respected African financial services group”.

Ike’s appointment is seen as a strategic step to advance this vision. Industry analysts anticipate that his expertise will drive profitability, operational efficiency, and regional expansion, reinforcing Access Holdings’ position in a competitive financial landscape.

For shareholders and stakeholders, this transition provides clarity and stability at a critical juncture.

As Access Holdings continues to navigate a dynamic financial landscape, Ike’s leadership, combined with Agbede’s ongoing contributions, positions the company to achieve its ambitious goals and maintain its status as a leading financial institution in Africa.
