3,000 Employees Across Africa, Europe, and Asia Set to Lose Jobs in Meta’s Latest Round of Layoffs

3,000 Employees Across Africa, Europe, and Asia Set to Lose Jobs in Meta’s Latest Round of Layoffs

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the tech world, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, is reportedly initiating a fresh round of layoffs in 2025.

According to a report first published by Reuters, the job cuts are expected to affect approximately 3,000 to 3,500 employees. The announcement is expected to be formalised anytime this week, though employees have already been informed via an internal memo.

Global Impact of Layoffs

The Mark Zuckerberg-led company plans to serve official layoff notices starting at 5 AM local time on Monday in several regions, including the United States.

For employees in Europe, Asia, and Africa, job-cut notifications will be issued between February 11 and February 18.

However, not all regions will experience the same impact. Due to strict labour laws and local regulations, countries such as Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands are reportedly exempt from this round of layoffs.

This exemption highlights the varying regulatory environments that global companies must navigate when restructuring their workforce.

A Continuing Trend of Workforce Reductions

Meta is no stranger to workforce reductions. This latest development continues a trend that began a few years ago. In 2022, the social media giant laid off 11,000 employees, representing 13% of its workforce.

The following year, in 2023, the company cut nearly 10,000 positions and withdrew 5,000 unfilled roles as part of Mark Zuckerberg’s “year of efficiency” strategy.

Despite these repeated layoffs, Meta appears to be charting a dual path, reducing its workforce in certain areas while investing heavily in future-focused roles.

Focus on AI and Machine Learning Roles

Interestingly, while laying off thousands of employees, Meta is accelerating its hiring process for machine learning (ML) engineers and other AI-driven roles.

A separate internal memo from Peng Fan, Meta’s VP of Engineering for Monetisation, reveals that this hiring initiative will take place between February 11 and March 13.

This aggressive push towards AI isn’t surprising. Just recently, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a massive $65 billion investment to strengthen the company’s AI infrastructure in 2025.

This investment will largely be directed toward developing a data centre exceeding 2 gigawatts (2 GW+) and expanding the AI team.

Zuckerberg has termed 2025 “a defining year for AI,” with ambitions for Meta AI to reach over 1 billion users by the end of the year.

This forward-thinking strategy indicates Meta’s commitment to remaining a leader in the AI landscape despite ongoing workforce reductions.

Meta’s Strategy Amid a Challenging Tech Landscape

Meta isn’t the only tech giant undergoing workforce changes in 2025. Companies like Microsoft and Amazon have also announced job cuts.

Data from The Challenger shows that around 49,795 jobs were cut across the US in January 2025, a 28% increase from the 38,792 job cuts in December.

However, this figure represents a 40% decrease compared to the 82,307 job cuts announced in January 2024.

The tech industry is undergoing significant shifts, with companies balancing workforce reductions against investments in emerging technologies like AI.

Meta, the global technology giant, continues to expand its footprint, including significant operations in Meta Singapore, a strategic hub for its growth in the Asia-Pacific region.

Despite its innovations, recent Meta layoffs reflect the company’s strategic realignments in a rapidly evolving industry landscape.

The Road Ahead for Meta

As Meta navigates these layoffs and continues its AI expansion, the company’s strategic moves will undoubtedly shape its future in the competitive tech landscape.

While job cuts are a difficult reality, the focus on AI development suggests that Meta is positioning itself for long-term growth and innovation.
