MoneyBadger Bags $400K to Power Bitcoin Payments Across Africa

Cryptocurrency is no longer just an investment asset; it’s becoming a practical payment method, especially in Africa, where innovative fintechs are bridging the gap between digital currencies and everyday retail.

Leading this charge is MoneyBadger, a South African startup that’s making headlines with its recent $400,000 (R7 million) pre-seed funding round.

MoneyBadger’s Breakthrough: $400,000 to Scale Crypto Payments

MoneyBadger secured $400,000 (approximately R7 million) in pre-seed funding, led by P1 Ventures, a venture capital firm with deep expertise in African fintech, alongside three angel investors with strong ties to the Bitcoin and crypto ecosystem.

This funding, partially raised in Bitcoin, emphasises investor confidence in MoneyBadger’s mission to make cryptocurrency a scalable, everyday payment solution across Africa.

Founded in 2022 by Carel van Wyk, co-founder of Luno, and Carl Kritzinger, founder of FireWorks, MoneyBadger emerged from a direct need: enabling Bitcoin payments at Pick n Pay, one of South Africa’s largest retail chains.

By leveraging the Bitcoin Lightning Network, MoneyBadger delivered a prototype that outperformed traditional tap-to-pay systems in speed, reliability, and cost.

Transforming Retail: Bitcoin Payments at 1,600+ Outlets

MoneyBadger has deployed its CryptoQR platform across over 1,600 retail outlets in South Africa, including all Pick n Pay hypermarkets, supermarkets, clothing stores, and express shops.

The platform processes over R1.4 million ($83,000) in monthly transactions, with Pick n Pay alone accounting for over R1 million ($59,000) in crypto sales each month.

Customers can use Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to buy groceries, airtime, electricity, municipal bills, and even travel tickets, making crypto a viable alternative to cash.

Seamless Integration with Major Crypto Wallets

MoneyBadger’s platform integrates with leading crypto wallets like Binance, Luno, VALR, and AltCoinTrader, while its proprietary QR scanning technology is embedded in Luno, VALR, Blink, and Aqua wallets.

This interoperability ensures a seamless payment experience for consumers and merchants alike. Retailers receive instant rand (ZAR) settlements, shielding them from crypto volatility, while customers enjoy the convenience of paying via QR codes or POS terminals.

Why Bitcoin Payments? The African Opportunity

Bitcoin’s value has surged 128% since 2022, rising from approximately $40,000 to over $108,000 by June 2025, with projections of continued growth.

This makes crypto an attractive payment option, particularly in Africa, where volatile currencies and limited banking access drive demand for alternative financial solutions.

South Africa, with over 7 million crypto users projected by 2026, is a prime market for MoneyBadger’s expansion.

The Chainalysis Global Adoption Index ranks South Africa 30th globally for crypto adoption, with Nigeria leading at second place.

MoneyBadger’s focus on practical, real-world use cases positions it to capitalise on this growing trend, especially as the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) regulates crypto as a financial product, fostering a supportive environment for adoption.

Strategic Partnerships and Expansion Plans

MoneyBadger’s recent partnership with Ecentric, a payment provider for two-thirds of South Africa’s listed retailers, enhances its ability to scale crypto payments to mid-tier and enterprise merchants.

The company is also targeting Tier 1 retailers, e-commerce gateways, and QR-based payment networks to broaden its reach.

With plans to expand into new African markets, MoneyBadger aims to replicate its South African success in regions with similar cash-heavy retail structures.

Why Merchants Should Adopt MoneyBadger Now

For retailers, MoneyBadger offers a frictionless way to tap into the growing crypto user base without disrupting existing systems. Key benefits include:

  • Instant Fiat Settlements: Merchants receive payments in ZAR, avoiding crypto volatility.
  • Low Transaction Fees: Starting at R1,000 for R40,000 monthly volume, with discounts for higher volumes.
  • Broad Wallet Compatibility: Supports Binance, Luno, VALR, and Lightning Network wallets.
  • Seamless Integration: QR-based payments align with existing consumer and teller behaviours.

With over 10% of South Africans projected to own crypto by 2025, merchants adopting MoneyBadger can attract tech-savvy, digital-first consumers and stay ahead in the evolving payments landscape.
