Zeno Closes Oversubscribed $9.5M Seed Round

Zeno, a pioneering startup founded by Tesla alumnus Michael Spencer in 2022, has secured a substantial $9.5 million in an oversubscribed seed round.

This funding, led by prominent investors like Lowercarbon Capital and Toyota Ventures, highlights the immense potential of Zeno’s vision to transform Africa’s energy and transport landscape.

Swappable Batteries: The Key to Scalability

At the heart of Zeno’s strategy is its swappable lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery. This innovative solution addresses one of the primary challenges hindering the widespread adoption of EVs in developing regions: range anxiety.

By enabling drivers to quickly swap depleted batteries for fully charged ones, Zeno aims to eliminate the concerns associated with limited charging infrastructure and lengthy charging times.

Beyond Transportation: Powering Homes and Businesses

The swappable batteries have the potential to transform the way African households and businesses access and utilise energy. In regions affected by frequent power outages or limited grid access, these batteries can serve as a reliable backup power source.

Early testing revealed that many drivers were eager to explore the possibilities of using the batteries beyond transportation. They experimented with modifying the batteries to power small businesses, such as flour mills and lights, during power outages. This demonstrated the immense potential of this technology in improving the quality of life for millions of Africans.

To facilitate the expansion of its battery ecosystem, Zeno is collaborating with manufacturers in India to develop more durable motorbikes that can withstand the demanding conditions of East Africa’s terrain.

Additionally, the startup is prototyping home battery docks and induction stoves that run on these swappable batteries. The long-term goal is for households to rely on Zeno batteries for a variety of energy needs, from cooking to powering electronics and even solar-powered home setups.

Zeno’s approach offers several advantages over traditional energy storage solutions. The swappable battery model eliminates the need for lengthy charging times, ensuring uninterrupted power supply.

Moreover, the batteries are designed to be highly durable and long-lasting, making them a cost-effective investment for both individuals and businesses.

By providing a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solution, Zeno is poised to play a crucial role in addressing Africa’s energy challenges.

As the startup continues to develop and expand its offerings, it has the potential to transform the lives of millions of people across the continent.

Expanding Reach and Impact

Zeno plans to introduce its first electric motorbikes in early 2025 in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, followed by India. Customers will have the flexibility to lease or purchase the bikes while subscribing to the battery service through a pay-per-use or subscription model.

The upfront costs for a bike paired with a battery lease are expected to be lower than purchasing a gas-powered alternative, giving Zeno a competitive edge in markets where cost is a primary concern.

A Holistic Approach to Green Growth

Zeno’s focus on both transport and energy positions it at the heart of Africa’s green growth ambitions. The introduction of electric motorbikes and battery swap stations aligns with wider efforts across the continent to embrace sustainable transport.

While other startups like Ampersand Solar, Roam, and Zembo are also vying for a share of Africa’s electric vehicle market, Zeno’s holistic approach of integrating transport with household energy solutions could set it apart.

Navigating a Competitive Landscape

Zeno will undoubtedly face competition from established players like Ampersand Energy and ARC Ride, both offering battery swap solutions. Roam is recognised for its durable e-bikes, while SPIRO has launched Africa’s first automated battery swap station in Kenya.
