Pochi la Biashara is Safaricom’s free business wallet that sits on your existing M-Pesa line, separates your business money from your personal funds, and can be activated in under five minutes with nothing more than your Safaricom number and your M-Pesa PIN.
No forms, no documents, no Safaricom shop visit, and no waiting period. Here is exactly how to do it.
What Pochi la Biashara Actually Is
Pochi la Biashara, which translates roughly as “business pouch,” creates a virtual business account on your current SIM card without requiring a new number, a Till number, or any formal business registration.
It is designed specifically for informal traders, food vendors, kiosk operators, boda-boda riders, secondhand clothes dealers, artisans, and freelancers who want a dedicated business wallet but do not need or want the complexity of a registered Till number.
The wallet sits alongside your personal M-Pesa on the same SIM. Customers send money to your Pochi wallet using your phone number, just as they would send to personal M-Pesa, but the funds land in a separate business wallet that you manage independently.
You can withdraw from Pochi directly at any M-Pesa agent, pay suppliers and bills using Lipa na Pochi, send money to other M-Pesa users, and sell airtime at a 5% commission per sale.
How to Activate Pochi la Biashara: Step by Step
Via USSD (works on any phone, no internet needed):
- Dial *334# from your M-Pesa registered Safaricom line
- Select Pochi la Biashara from the menu (option 8)
- Select Join Pochi
- Accept the Terms and Conditions
- Select your business category from the menu provided
- Enter your M-Pesa PIN to confirm
You will receive an SMS confirming your Pochi la Biashara wallet is active. You can start receiving payments immediately.
Via My OneApp (Safaricom’s super app, launched April 2026):
In April 2026, Safaricom merged the M-Pesa app and MySafaricom app into a single super app called My OneApp.
Pochi la Biashara is accessible within the app for smartphone users who prefer a visual interface. Download My OneApp on Android or iOS, navigate to Pochi la Biashara in the app menu, and follow the on-screen prompts to join.
The USSD route remains available and works identically for feature phone users.
What Makes Pochi Different From Regular M-Pesa
The most important feature for traders is payment reversal protection. With standard M-Pesa, a sender can initiate a reversal without your involvement.
With Pochi la Biashara, any reversal requires your explicit approval as the business owner.
This one feature addresses what has been a persistent problem in Kenya’s informal trade sector, where fraudulent reversal requests, sometimes called Wash Wash scams, have cost traders significant amounts.
Once money lands in your Pochi wallet, it stays there unless you approve a reversal or move it yourself.
The second key feature is financial separation. Mixing business and personal money is one of the most common reasons small businesses in Kenya struggle to understand their actual profitability.
Pochi la Biashara enforces that separation structurally: business income goes into Pochi, personal money stays in M-Pesa, and you can see exactly what each account holds at any time.
What Pochi la Biashara Costs
Setting up Pochi la Biashara is free. There is no registration fee, no monthly fee, and no cost to receive money into your Pochi wallet.
Standard M-Pesa transaction charges apply when customers send money to your Pochi number, the same tariff as sending to any M-Pesa number.
Withdrawals from Pochi at an agent follow the standard M-Pesa withdrawal tariff based on the amount withdrawn.
Selling airtime from Pochi earns you a 5% commission per sale. There is no commission when you buy airtime for yourself.

What You Can Do With Your Pochi Wallet Once Active
Once your Pochi la Biashara is live, the wallet supports the following:
Receiving payments: Customers dial *334# or open My OneApp, select Pochi la Biashara, enter your phone number, and send money. It arrives in your Pochi wallet, not your personal M-Pesa.
Withdrawing cash: Visit any M-Pesa agent and withdraw from your Pochi wallet directly, without transferring to personal M-Pesa first.
Paying suppliers and bills: Use Lipa na Pochi to pay Paybill numbers, Buy Goods tills, or other M-Pesa numbers from your business wallet.
Selling airtime: Sell Safaricom airtime directly from your Pochi wallet and earn a 5% commission on each sale to customers. No commission applies when buying airtime for your own use.
Transferring to personal M-Pesa: Move money from Pochi to your personal M-Pesa wallet at any time through the app or USSD menu when you need personal funds.
Pochi la Biashara vs Till Number: Which Do You Need?
Pochi la Biashara and a Safaricom Till number both separate business from personal money, but they serve different business stages and needs.
Pochi la Biashara is the right choice if you are an informal trader, freelancer, or small operator who wants a business wallet immediately with no paperwork, no KRA PIN requirement, and no documents. It works on your existing number and takes five minutes to activate.
A Till number is the right choice if you want a dedicated business identifier that is separate from your personal phone number, if you want funds settled directly to a bank account, or if you are running a shop, restaurant, or business where customers expect to pay to a recognisable five or six-digit business code.
A Till number requires a KRA PIN, identification documents, and in some cases business registration documents.
For most informal traders and early-stage businesses, Pochi la Biashara is the faster and simpler starting point.
You can always graduate to a Till number later as your business formalises.
Building a Credit History Through Pochi
Consistent use of Pochi la Biashara creates a verifiable transaction history on your Safaricom account.
Safaricom uses that business activity data to assess eligibility for targeted small-business loans, including products like Mkopo wa Pochi, which uses Pochi transaction history as the credit assessment basis rather than requiring traditional collateral or bank statements.
For informal traders who are invisible to the conventional banking system, Pochi la Biashara is not just a payment tool: it is the beginning of a formal financial identity.
*All features and charges should be verified at safaricom.co.ke or by dialling 334# for the current menu. Features are subject to change.
