MTN Rwanda has taken a big step towards greener practices by introducing the nation’s first biodegradable SIM cards. Known as bioSIMs, these cards are made from 100% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified materials, guaranteeing they originate from responsibly managed forests.

This eco-friendly move aligns with MTN Rwanda’s commitment to reducing their environmental footprint and adds to their existing eSIM offering.

The Importance of Sustainable SIM Cards

Traditional plastic SIM cards are harmful to the environment. They are made from non-biodegradable materials that can take hundreds of years to decompose.

Moreover, the production process of traditional SIM cards releases greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change. On the other hand, biodegradable SIM cards are eco-friendly alternatives that decompose naturally, reducing waste and environmental pollution.

The Making of BioSIMs

MTN Rwanda’s biodegradable SIM cards are made using paper-based materials that are FSC certified. These materials come from responsibly managed forests, ensuring that the production process does not harm the environment.

The certification ensures that the forests are managed sustainably and that the materials used to make the bioSIMs are traceable. Additionally, the bioSIMs are designed to be easily broken down by microorganisms, reducing waste and environmental pollution.

MTN Rwanda’s Environmental Strategy

MTN Group’s Environmental Strategy aims to transition away from plastic SIMs and improve packaging. As part of this strategy, MTN Rwanda has introduced biodegradable SIM cards to complement their existing eSIM offering.

By offering both options, MTN Rwanda empowers customers to choose the most environmentally friendly solution for their needs. The company is committed to reducing its environmental impact and making sustainable choices that benefit the planet.

By introducing bioSIMs, MTN Rwanda is taking a significant step towards achieving this goal. MTN Project Zero aims to achieve zero net carbon emissions by 2040.

As part of this initiative, MTN Rwanda has updated 23 percent of its vehicle fleet to hybrid electric models and initiated a solar panel pilot at three data centres.
