Understanding the Benefits

This is a major departure from the previous system, where individuals had to be registered with the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) and maintain full membership to receive treatment. Furthermore, NHIF coverage was primarily focused on rehabilitation and curative care.

The SHA is responsible for managing three funds: the government-funded Primary Healthcare Fund (Ksh. 50 billion), the member-contributed Social Health Insurance Fund (Ksh. 148 billion annually), and the Emergency, Chronic, and Critical Illnesses Fund (Ksh. 75 billion annually).

The Social Health Authority (SHA) in Kenya offers a comprehensive range of healthcare services, including:

  • Preventive: This includes measures to prevent diseases, such as vaccinations and health education.
  • Promotive: This involves activities that promote health and well-being, like encouraging healthy lifestyles.
  • Curative: This encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and injuries.

Children without identification can use documentation provided by the state department responsible for social protection.

How to Register

  1. Visit the SHA website: Open the SHA website on your web browser.
  2. Start the registration process: Click on Register and begin the registration process.
  3. Review Policies and Terms: Familiarise yourself with the policies, instructions, and terms and conditions before proceeding.
  4. Provide Your Details: Enter your personal information as prompted during the self-registration process.
  5. Review and Submit: Confirm the accuracy of your details and submit your application.

To register for SHIF, dial *147# on your mobile phone. Enter your national identification number and follow the prompts to provide your personal information.

SHIF Contributions

Under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), the amount you contribute depends on your income:

  • Sh20,000: Sh550
  • Sh50,000: Sh1,375
  • Sh100,000: Sh2,750
  • Sh200,000: Sh5,500
  • Sh500,000: Sh13,750
  • Sh1 million and above: Sh27,500
