United Kingdom Investment in Kenya’s Green Initiatives

United Kingdom Investment in Kenya's Green Initiatives

The UK has pledged a major increase in green funding;initiatives that prioritize environmental sustainability, up from £3.1 million to a substantial £6.6 million (approximately Ksh. 1.1 billion).

This increased support aims to propel the development of 50 green investment initiatives across 10 Kenyan counties.

Following the comprehensive County Green Finance Assessment, conducted by Financial Sector Deepening Kenya (FSD Kenya) with UK support and collaboration from local and international partners, this move represents a concrete step towards evaluating the green finance capabilities of ten Kenyan counties.

These counties include Embu, Kirinyaga, Kisumu, Laikipia, Nairobi, Makueni, Nandi, Taita-Taveta, Vihiga, and Wajir.

The report was created specifically for Africa and focuses on four key factors, including financial performance, credit risk, green investment opportunities, and the ability of countries to manage green finance.

It was developed by Agusto & Co., Africa’s only certified credit-rating agency for verifying green bonds, projects, and assets.

The project was a collaboration with the Capital Markets Authority, the ADA Consortium, and the Nairobi Securities Exchange and was approved by the National Treasury and Economic Planning.

The County Green Finance Assessment identified key areas where green investments can make a significant impact. Key government services like water, healthcare, and energy were highlighted as having immense potential for sustainable development.

Increased demand for these essential services creates opportunities to implement innovative green solutions, fostering both economic growth and environmental protection.

The increased funding goes beyond just infrastructure. A portion will be dedicated to developing new financial solutions that make affordable, green housing a reality for Kenyans.

This approach aims to create a ripple effect, boosting local economies, generating jobs, and preserving Kenya’s breathtaking biodiversity and landscapes.

A Collaborative Effort for Climate Action

“The next step will be to prepare green projects with counties so that green funding can be directed towards local development priorities in a manner that creates lasting impact,” says Tamara Cook, CEO of FSD Kenya.

This collaborative approach ensures that the funding directly addresses the specific needs of each county.

FSD Kenya has a history of assisting Kenyan counties and collaborating on the County Climate Change Fund (CCCF) mechanism.

This partnership has enabled counties to allocate over KES 636 million towards environmentally-friendly projects within local communities.

Leigh Stubblefield, Development Director at the British High Commission in Nairobi, further emphasized the UK’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s fight against climate change.

“As flooding causes disruption across Kenya, we can see clearly how the countries that are least responsible for climate change are the worst affected. We admire Kenya’s impressive climate credentials and are proud of our climate partnerships,” she said.

This initiative forms part of a larger global movement towards green growth. By supporting Kenya’s transition to a more sustainable future, the UK is contributing to an international effort to integrate environmental protection into economic development strategies.

The UK’s increased green funding for Kenya is a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the East African nation.
